Dr. Cova believes it is important to begin prenatal care sooner rather than later. A missed menstrual cycle could be an indication of gestation. We start by making a confirmation of pregnancy appointment. This is an opportunity for Dr. Cova and her staff to provide support and expertise.<\/p>\n
Early in pregnancy, we will obtain samples from your blood, and urine. A cervical Pap test may be done to check for changes of the cervix. In addition, a test for sexually transmitted infections may be performed as required by the state. At each routine prenatal visit, we will sample your urine to detect sugar and protein levels.<\/p>\n

At approximately eight weeks, an initial prenatal visit appointment will be made. At this time, Dr. Cova and her staff will complete a thorough medical and lifestyle history. There are certain tests that are performed specifically in your second trimester. Gestational diabetes screening is performed between 26-28 weeks. Patients that develop gestational diabetes are co managed with a perinatologist and dietician to ensure optimal blood sugar control.<\/p>\n
The second trimester is also an optimal time to consider cord blood banking. Banking your newborn\u2019s cord blood stem cells allows for immediate access to the stem cells if needed for a transplant. Dr. Cova will discuss your cord blood banking options during the second trimester.<\/p>\n
